What is a proprietary blend?
A proprietary blend lists a total weight for a group of ingredients without giving the individual amount of each one. The ingredients are usually listed in descending order by weight, but the label does not reveal enough information to match each ingredient to a research dose.
Why that matters for eye supplements
Eye-nutrition research often depends on exact amounts: 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin in AREDS2, for example. When those ingredients appear inside a larger blend without individual amounts, ingredient presence can be verified but dose equivalence cannot.
VisiFlora's 351 mg blend
The current label groups fourteen ingredients into 351 mg total. Because some of those are botanicals, carotenoids and antioxidant compounds that are commonly studied at very different dose ranges, the total alone cannot tell you how much of each is present.
Questions to ask
- Are the ingredients I care about individually dosed?
- Is a research claim about the ingredient or the finished product?
- Does the study use the same dose, formulation and population?
- Will the blend overlap with medicines or other supplements?
